Sol is French for soil.

It is also, in half the languages around it, the word for sun. Soil and sun — the only two things a cotton plant has ever needed, sharing a name by accident.

Soil is the part nobody photographs. It's under the paddock, under the crop, under the shirt you're reading about. Every claim this label makes about organic cotton is really a claim about dirt — what went into it, what didn't, and whether anyone bothered to ask.

The mark on the front isn't a drawing. It's a diagram: one circle, one line through it. Above and below. Sun on one side, soil on the other. OD Signature Emblem.

The OD Cut Guide

Regular (|) REG
Relaxed (/) REL
Oversized (+) OS
Extra-OS (++) XOS

Cut oversized and boxy with an exaggerated dropped shoulder, shortened at the hem. Take your usual size for the intended drape, or size down one for a neater fit. The sleeves are cut wide and long on purpose.

Cut positions are relative to standard Australian women's sizing. SOL is cut for a women's fit in sizes XS to XL.

Why you’ll live in it

— Mid-weight 180gsm organic combed cotton — enough body to hold its shape, soft from the first wear
— Relaxed oversized cut through the body with real room, finishing cropped at the hip
— The widest sleeves we've made — cut straight and deep from a dropped shoulder, nearly as wide at the cuff as at the elbow
— Sleeves cut long on purpose, falling past the wrist and over the back of the hand
— Exaggerated drop shoulders that sit well down the upper arm
— Fine 2.2cm ribbed neckline that holds its shape wash after wash
— Coverstitched hems at body and cuffs
— Shoulder-to-shoulder tape for longevity
— Tear-away main label — no scratch, no fuss
— Cotton size tag and cotton care label · no plastic in the trims
— Fine tonal graphic across the chest, plain back
— Combed cotton, spun from longer smoother fibres — softer on the skin, longer wearing

WHY THERE ARE ONLY 25

We make small runs because we'd rather sell out than write off. 25 of SOL exist. When they're gone we don't reprint — the next episode is already in the works, and the point of an episode is that it ends.

It's not a tactic. Overproduction is the single biggest problem in this industry, and the only honest way a small label avoids contributing to it is to make less than it thinks it can sell.

Fit and sizing

SOL is cut relaxed and oversized through the body. Take your usual size for the intended fit, or size down one if you want it closer.

Worth knowing what "cropped" means here: it is shortened, not a crop top. In a size S the body measures 58.5cm from the high point of the shoulder to the hem — roughly two centimetres shorter than our standard boxy tee. Worn with a high waistband it sits just above it. Worn with something lower, it finishes at the top of the hip. It is not cut to show the midriff.

The sleeves are the piece. They're cut deliberately wide and deliberately long — meant to hang clear of the arm and fall over the back of the hand. Push them up and they'll stay, but they're drawn to be worn down.

Fit reference: a size S measures 61.5cm across the chest and 58.5cm in length, flat. Lay a top you already own and love beside those numbers — it'll tell you more than anyone else's measurements could.

SIZE GUIDE (CM)

Size Guide

Size AU Chest Length Sleeve
XS 6–8 59 56.5 53
S 8–10 61.5 58.5 53
M 10–12 64 60.5 53
L 12–14 66.5 62.5 54
XL 14–16 69 64.5 54

AU sizes shown are standard Australian women's sizing, as a guide only. SOL is cut for a women's fit.

Measurements are point to point on the flat garment, in centimetres. They include a little extra length and width to allow for natural shrinkage, so SOL stays comfortable after washing.

Where to measure from

The easiest way to find your size: take a piece you already own and love the fit of, lay it flat, and compare it to the numbers above.

Chest width
Across the chest from one armpit to the other. This is a flat measurement, so double it for the full body circumference. A size M measures 64cm flat, about 128cm around.
Body length
From the highest point of the shoulder, where the neck meets the shoulder, straight down to the bottom hem. SOL is shortened rather than cropped short - a size S is 58.5cm, about 12cm shorter than our boyfriend and slouch tees.
Sleeve
From the shoulder seam, along the outside of the arm, to the bottom of the cuff. Cut long on purpose.
FABRIC & FEEL

180gsm GOTS-certified organic combed cotton jersey — the mid-weight that does the most. Combed cotton is spun from longer, smoother fibres, so it sits softer against the skin and wears longer than standard cotton. Certified organic all the way back to the soil it grew in, which on this episode is rather the point.

The weight matters more here than on a standard tee. A lighter cloth would let these sleeves collapse against the arm and the whole shape would disappear. At 180gsm the fabric has enough body to hold the sleeve open and the hem straight, while still falling rather than standing away from you.

Choc plum: a deep chocolate brown with a plum cast running through it, dyed to a quiet matte finish with a faint natural slub. It reads browner in daylight and plummier under a lamp.

CARE

Made to last — wash it like you mean it.

— Cold machine wash with similar colours
— Wash inside-out
— Do not bleach
— Do not tumble dry
— Reshape and line dry in the shade
— Cool iron if needed, never directly on the print

Line dry the sleeves flat, or hung by the body rather than pegged at the cuffs. There's a lot of fabric in them and wet weight will pull the hem out of line if you let it hang from one point.

FAQs

How cropped is it, really?
Shortened, not a crop top. A size S is 58.5cm shoulder to hem — about 12cm shorter than our boyfriend and slouch tees. It finishes at the top of the hip and isn't cut to show the midriff.

How does SOL fit?
Relaxed and oversized through the body — take your usual size, or size down one for a neater line.

Are the sleeves really that wide?
Yes. They're cut nearly as wide at the cuff as at the elbow, and long enough to cover the back of your hand. That's the design, not a sizing error.

What is the graphic?
A circle with one line through it. Above and below — sun and soil. A diagram rather than a drawing, printed tonal so it sits quietly in the cloth.

What colour is choc plum?
A deep chocolate brown with a plum cast through it. Browner in daylight, plummier under a lamp.

What does SOL mean?
Soil, in French. It's also the word for sun in several languages around it. Two things a cotton plant needs, one word.

Is it really organic?
Yes — 100% GOTS-certified organic combed cotton, with a GOTS organic paper tag at the inseam.

Is there a print on the back?
No. A fine tonal graphic on the front, plain back.

Is it unisex?
SOL is cut for a women's fit, XS to XL.

Will it shrink?
The measurements already include a little extra length and width for natural settling. Cold wash and line dry and it'll hold its fit.

Where is it made?
Designed and printed in the Byron Bay hinterland. The cotton is woven, dyed and assembled offshore under GOTS certification. We say it plainly because we'd rather be accurate than flattering.

Will you make more? No. Episodes don't get reprinted. When this run is gone, it's gone.

FOR THE NEXT GENERATION

We named this label Oldest Daughter because the women who carry the most deserve clothes built to carry them back. Every piece starts with one question: will this still be in your wardrobe in five years? Certified-organic fibres, considered construction, small runs, nothing wasted.

This one goes a step under that. You can't certify a shirt without certifying the soil it started in — no synthetic fertiliser, no prohibited pesticides, ground that's tested rather than assumed. It's slow, it costs more, and it's invisible in the finished garment.

Which is the whole reason to name an episode after it.
